... If you've done bad things before and want to change -- you can understand why people won't forgive you. It isn't really about being forgiven - but making up for the hurt that you've caused others.
( A part of Asriel wonders if Ochako will realize that he isn't just speaking about people in general. But... he can't help but think that if someone really wants to make up for what they've done to others, they'll try to do it for ultimately selfless reasons. But, he knows firsthand that there's a lot of selfish people out there, regardless of what they've done. )
I don't think it's naïve. ( He says that with some confidence. ) ... Ochako, there's a lot of people who... aren't so nice out there, that don't want to make up for the bad that they've done to others. But... it's what makes the people who want to do good for others so special.
( He pauses at what she asks next, offering a small smile. )
Monsters are made of magic, so we all have different sorts of abilities. Mom and Dad were always really good with fire magic! S-So... I think that'd be what I would've been good with.
[She's clued in, yes, and actually reaches out to place a gentle hand on his head again and stroke the fur there. There's no way Ochako can know the things he's done, just what he's doing now to right whatever wrongs he committed. He's a rather intelligent child, actually, and she couldn't have said all that better herself, really. He gets it - why being better for the sake of everyone around you is just the catalyst, but to change oneself for oneself is the true end goal. Forgiveness versus atonement...it's something she's witness firsthand in someone else, over time.]
I agree with you.
[That people who do good for others are special. That they've looked back at themselves in the mirror and chose not to see the past, but the future...yet remained true to themselves in the process. She pats Asriel's head and folds her hands in her lap, listening closely.]
Eh? So your kind of qui--eh, magic is passed down through genes, too? Kind of? Actually, that's how quirks in my world are passed down. Sometimes a parent's quirk is given to their baby, or it can be a mix of both. But you know, I think fire would kind of suit you, Asriel-kun. It's a pretty dangerous thing when you first think about it...but then you have to remember how warm and cozy your get by a big fireplace on a cold day, or having a hot cup of tea in the morning...grilling fish or squid at a beach bonfire in summer and laughing with people... You have that same kind of warmth and glow of a bright flame, I think, ehehe.
( Asriel can't help but stop for a moment when she reaches over, eyes closing when she strokes that fur. It's a little embarrassing, but the affectionate gesture is enough to make his tail wag a bit in happiness. He went so long without feeling gentleness in his life that any of it comes to him as a surprise. Still, he doesn't make any movements to pull away. Instead, he gently pushes his head towards it.
Quirks, huh? He can't help but think that those were abilities in her own world. At the least, it's no longer surprising to hear that humans could use magic in their own world. So many worlds seemed different from his own... )
... Mom would make fire just to keep us warm a lot. It... was never really dangerous, but it's the kind of magic that she had. I-I don't think it's really exactly the same for every monster, but... Boss Monsters are special. We're supposed to be the strongest monsters in the Underground. Uhm -- I think it's part of why everyone looked to Dad as the king of monsters.
But... you're really kind, Ochako. I think that if I could pick out magic for you... it'd be the same. You'd have something really gentle.
( He has doubts that he's as warm as she's saying. Every so often, he still hears that same bitter, angry voice that he had heard so often when he was still a flower... Old habits die hard, and there's still some part of him that holds a cynical part of the world. Though, being here is proving that his old mindset was truly something that was wrong. That it didn't have to be kill or be killed. )
[Oh my god--the moment Ochako sees the tail wagging, she actually has to bite her lip to suppress a rather girlish squeal of delight. That's too stinking cute, and her heart squeezes at the sight. Woof, reel it back in...]
Eh? 'Boss Monsters'? [Ochako actually starts to giggle a little bit this time, unable to help herself, though she does cover her mouth a little bit to not sound too offensive or anything.] That sounds just like a video game!! Your world sounds so interesting... It's sort of like what I'd expect from one of my books, or sho--oh?
Ah--eh...eheh! I'm r-really not...but thank you, you're very sweet to say that, Asriel-kun. I try to be a nice person, but I know I can kind of just say whatever's on my mind, and it comes out a little bit rude sometimes... [She's overly blunt, and suffers from "Open Mouth, Insert Foot" disease constantly.] But, um...i-if I have a power, or a quirk, or magic...I'd want it to be something I could use to help people. I've been training my magic mostly for that purpose, since there aren't any Heroes here, I just have to do my best with what I can do, you know? The quests here are really similar to commissions and jobs we take on as Heroes back home.
[Ochako lifts her head up as a buzzer sounds loudly, and a voice over the intercoms calls for all tournament participants to make their way back to the arena. Looks like the events are going to start soon, and the fighters will be picked to go against one another. She's pretty sure she won't get picked first (hopefully), so Ochako can use the time in between to watch and do her stretches. Anyway, she's already standing.]
( Asriel blinks a bit at that before smiling a bit. Maybe it does sound a little silly, though it does make sense, doesn't it? Boss monsters were a bit different from other monsters. They were strong, and depended more on their children than other monsters did... It was really only one of the reasons why Asriel's death came as a shock to not only his parents, but to the rest of the Underground. )
Heehee, it does sound a little like something from a game or a book, huh? But... I guess it's 'cause the other monsters always saw us as leaders.
( He can't help but shake his head at her next words. )
I... I think we can all say things that we don't really mean, but... you really want to help others, and be as kind as you can. I... think just wanting that shows that you really do have a kind heart.
( Asriel may be a child, but he's lived longer than anyone here can really even start to guess. During that time, he's seen all kinds of people -- he's met every monsters in the Underground, and humans that had fallen to the Underground that were so different from one another. It's been enough experience to be well aware of what someone with ill-intentions can do to someone. It's... rare to meet someone who honestly just wants to selflessly help.
He stops at the buzzer, looking to Ochako with curiosity and a slight head tilt. )
O-Oh... uhm... It's going to be your turn to go really soon, isn't it?
[Ochako smiles back at Asriel - she never really knows what to do when someone calls her kind, of compliments her in general. Ochako sort of has a big mouth sometimes, saying what's on her mind, or being a little too forward and blunt. Honestly? She can be a little rude without meaning to, but her heart is in the right place when it comes to really helping people, like he said. Ochako just...really, really likes when people around her are happy and smiling. And she wants to protect that.
As the buzzer sounds again, a second call for the tournament attendees, Ochako nods her head and giggles.]
Mmh, seems like it, so I should probably get going to the arena hall. You'll watch for me, right? Ehehe, I hope I can count on you cheering me on, Asriel-kun!!
[She holds out a balled fist to her tiny, fuzzy friend. Fist bump of good luck?]
( At this point, fighting is something that makes Asriel a bit nervous, but he also knows that this is just for fun. No one's going to seriously end up hurt - and, if they do, then he's sure that there are healers nearby who can help them.
He blinks a bit at the fist before raising his own, bumping his fist against hers. )
Good luck, Ochako! I'll be right here when you're done!
