Asriel will be coming from
isleofavalon! In this game, he's gone through quite a bit of development. While he hasn't changed completely as a character, he found himself arriving as himself. While initially afraid that it would only be a matter of time before he changed back into Flowey, he was reunited with Chara before he could hide himself away from others.
After a tearful reunion, Asriel learned that he somehow had his SOUL back, and he wouldn't change back into Flowey. He promised to himself then that he would value the time he had with Chara that he could be with them as himself. However, at this point in time, he had realized that Chara had made numerous mistakes in the past. Spending time with them in Avalon only reinforced that belief. He discovered that Chara was not only hiding things from him, but was still manipulating him – this time, in having Asriel stay at his side.
Perhaps it was thanks to the many friends that Asriel made in Avalon that helped influence him into not only believing more in himself, but taught him about the kind of friendship that he hadn't had before. After all, friendships can come in many different forms.
Due to the friendships that he made in Avalon, Asriel was able to begin to change back into the person he was before he had changed into Flowey. He had met others who had become not only sibling like, but those who were also like parents he no longer had. Most of all, he had began to accept that he was no longer the flower that he was that would bring harm to others.
Personality: ❀ CARING: Asriel was not only raised by two extremely loving parents, but seems to have the same empathetic and caring nature that Asgore and Toriel have. This shows especially when he comes to the first fallen human's rescue. Despite the fact that humans had once sealed monsters underground, Asriel doesn't seem to hesitate to help the child when they fall into the ruins. Monsters in Undertale are also quite literally made of empathy and love. It resonates through their SOUL. This caring nature also leads to him being rather sensitive. He's called a crybaby in a few points during Undertale's canon.
❀ IMPRESSIONABLE: Asriel seems deeply influenced by those around him – perhaps even moreso than other children are. He takes after Asgore via his way of speaking with a Southern dialect. This also shows especially after death when he seems to copy some of his best friend's mannerisms – whether it be through their “creepy smiles” or the mischief that the both of them seemed to get into together. The fact that they're easily influenced by others is also what leads them to get caught up in things where they can be in over their head. This is seen mostly when it comes to the plan to free monsters in the underground, even if it meant that Chara would sacrifice themselves for it.
❀ LOVING: This loving nature is both a positive and negative aspect of Asriel's character. It's his loving nature that can lead him to helping others – doing what he can to make others happy and in his words “give them a happy ending,” however – Asriel loves others to what may be an unhealthy degree. The desperation and need to see Chara again is what leads Asriel to want to force Frisk to kill others and ultimately change them into a person who would be more like their sibling It gets to the point where they use and perhaps even see Frisk as a replacement for Chara. When Asriel loves, he loves hard. He states how he loves and cares for Chara more than anyone else. When he changed into Flowey, he worked to give others a happy ending in what might be seen as a desperate attempt to feel the love that he lost.
❀ CYNICAL: Despite having been saved by Frisk, Asriel still deeply carries a cynical view of the world. Despite no longer believing in the philosophy kill-or-be-killed, Asriel is well aware that there are many dangerous people in the world. He knows that his best friend's plan was not something he should have completely had faith in, and that they weren't the “best person.” Perhaps this is due to the fact that Asriel ended up influenced by Frisk, just as he had Chara. However, as Flowey – it seemed as though Asriel truly believed that things such as love and faith in others were worthless things. While Asriel has remembered what it is like to love and care for others, this doesn't change their previous way of believing.
❀ COWARDLY: Despite being willing to kill others time and time again, Asriel is also the kind of person to run away the moment that his own life is in danger. He seems to want to desperately cling to things that he's familiar with or what he wants to keep control of. The want and need to have “God-like” powers was more of a way for Flowey to remain in control of the power of DETERMINATION. In the no-mercy run, he also changes his mind and decides the path that Frisk takes is ultimately a bad idea only when his own life is in danger. He ultimately tries to save Asgore to prevent Frsik from attempting to kill him.
❀ RELATIONSHIPS: Asriel has several important relationships. The most important being Chara. Chara is a human who had fallen into the Underground that Asriel had found and helped. They quickly became best friends, and it is said by other characters that they were like siblings. He shares a friendly relationship with them and says in canon that he believes that he understands and cares from Chara more than anyone else. After Chara dies, much of Flowey's mannerisms may have come from them, but his kill-or-be-killed philosophy may have come from the trauma he faced after being attacked and killed by humans. As for Toriel and Asgore – his parents – he may have been close to them at one point, and while he still cares for them, Asriel knows that it's incredibly unlikely that he'll never see them again after the barrier is shattered. It's clear that Asriel was deeply cared for and loved by them and that the feeling was very much mutual. As said before, he was influenced by his family to the point where he would mimic certain quirks.
Abilities & Inventory: Since Asriel will not be coming into the game with his magical familiar from Avalon, he also will not have any of the magic he had from the last game.
While canon doesn't really go behind what powers Asriel may have had before turning into Flowey, and any powers he has as a final boss isn't going to be available to him either, he may be able to inherit the powers that his parents have! Toriel and Asgore both have the power to use fire magic both offensively and practically. For example, Toriel and Asgore have both used fire magic to do things like light fire in a fire place or to cook on a stove. However, this is magic that would take time to both be self-taught and grow.
Inventory-wise, the only thing he really will bring is the clothes on his back, and a heart-shaped locket with the words “best friends forever” inscribed inside of it.
Suitability & Plans: I actually really loved Asriels' development in Avalon and I think this would be a good game to continue it in. He's grown a lot as a person despite how he still has his insecurities and uncertainties. I feel like a new environment would not only be good for his character, but he'd have more chance for growth in a game like this one. Besides, I've found that Asriel is a character more suited to a game that's more based off of slice of life elements and fantasy than other genres for games on Dreamwidth.
Since he's coming from another fantasy game, he'll know a little of what to expect, all while being surprised by the new elements and abilities here. Plus, with Asriel being an emotional character, I think the emotion magic would be especially fun to play around with.
